I met up with “Baby” while participating at a fashion event at the Drake Hotel – immediately we connected. We talked about our travels, laughed , and in a short time shared so much Flare, Passion and Zest for life. We kicked up our heals that day and promised to keep in touch. We have been true to our promise and now it is my pleasure to introduce “Baby” and her creative fashion talents.
This Brazilian born artist and entrepreneur is known on the Toronto scene for her strong fashion statements and elaborate events.
What began as a hobby in her home country , creating jewellery has become a passion and obsession for Toronto based artist Baby Steinberg. During the mid 90’s while working as a nurse, Baby volunteered in the favelas of South Brazil teaching kids how to make necklaces. Baby’s love for the art of fashion was born. From this experience she decided to attend art classes instead of pursuing medicine.
Years later and after many travels, designing jewellery for Baby wasn’t enough and she began designing clothing. Her style is of it’s own and can definitely be described as worldly and avant garde.
Besides using fabrics for her designs she also uses recycled materials such as plastic bags, cellphone parts, used umbrellas, old keys,etc..
“Going back and forth between Canada and Brazil gives me my inspiration and creativity”, she admits. Not known for her fondness to colder climates, she typically spends the winter season down south with an assortment of family and friends. This is where her ideas develop and also where she buys many of the materials she uses to make her collections.
Baby’s designs has been future in various fashion and art shows, as well in magazines such as Moda(Brazil), German Vogue, Straut, Muslin Girl e others…

My husband surprised me with a necklace that Baby made and I love it ! It’s unique and playful and I always get compliments. Mostly I always think of WHO made it and suddenly the piece comes alive with personality! It’s a great addition to my wide and varied collection of treasured pieces.

About my name…There is famous singer(1970s) in Brazil called Baby Consuelo and thas how i got the name from. She has 6 kids and all of them have unusual English names as well.
Funny enough when i was tennager i kind of look like her.
I started years ago making tops and skirts for my self and friends, 2 years ago i began making and selling summer dresses from fabrics that i buy in Brazil.
I am working on my BABY Bs bikini collection that will be sold whole sale here next summer, i hope!

Baby Consuelo (born July 18, 1952) (also known as Baby do Brasil) is a Brazilian performer, singer and composer. Although she is known for her energetic performances and compositions in rock, Baby has a composed also for the samba and MPB scene. Early in her career she was a member of Novos Baianos, and was at once married to Brazilian guitarist and fellow bandmate Pepeu Gomes.
